Wingnut 13 Posted January 23, 2018 Okay so Im sure almost everyone knows about the bad flu epidemic going on. For this reason, I have been in a constant state of panic and anxiety as being sick or becoming ill is my BIGGEST most crippling fear. Tonight I have a headache and feel sweaty, as well as some achy-ness. I live in South Florida and work outside everyday in the brush. My father had recently been sick for a week bad, and I have been scared of catching it. Im losing my mind because supposubly this flu is very fatal?? ? I won't sugarcoat it; as you well know, the flu is awful to experience. But rest assured that the vast majority of fatalities are people with already compromised immune systems or serious underlying health conditions. If you are a generally healthy, young adult, fatality is extremely extremely unlikely.
Iugrad91 501 Posted January 23, 2018 As Doxie said, fatalities from the flu are rare even though the news would have you think otherwise. Healthy adults can recover from the flu without a problem. If you do feel like you are coming down with the flu it's always a good idea to get tested so you know for sure (and don't spread it to others by going out) and see if your doctor might give you a prescription for Tamiflu. Jae 211 Posted January 23, 2018 Flu is definitely getting a lot of attention these days. I came down with it on Dec 29th. It came on fast, in 2 hours I went from a little sore throat to needing to lay down. It was miserable but very survivable. I caught up on some recorded tv shows and on day 6 went to work. I hope you don't get it but if you do, you'll be just fine. Nearly everyone I know has had it and no one has had any serious issues or lasting affects. Our bodies are good at fighting the bug.
bin_tenn 1252 Posted January 23, 2018 A lot of things are potentially fatal, but you're not worried about those things, are you? The flu has potential to be fatal during any season; this one is not special. You're fine.
Wingnut 13 Posted January 23, 2018 Thank you everyone! To be honest for the past week ive felt like ive been fighting something. Im laying in bed feeling really hot/sweaty but my skin is cold... 45 minutes ago, bin_tenn said: A lot of things are potentially fatal, but you're not worried about those things, are you? Especially illness :/ My job requires me to go out into some pretty swampy, gator-ridden, hazardous areas...it’s been a miracle I actually enjoy it. Shanowl80 73 Posted January 23, 2018 I have also had a lot of anxiety about this too. I have been sick but it’s been a sinus infection, no flu. I think all my worrying is making it harder for my body to heal. You are not alone.
Wingnut 13 Posted February 9, 2018 I am laying in bed tonight with a sore throat and stuffy nose. My chest also feels heavy and hard to breathe. I am freaking out so badly that if I do get this flu, I will die! When I was about 16 years old I was the 34th case in the state of Florida to catch the swine flu. It was horrific.

You are way stronger than you give yourself credit for. IF you get the flu you will be ok. You most likely have a cold or sinuses etc.. my daughter's had a virus with coughing and fever.. both tested neg for the flu. It can a lot of other things as well. Hugs!!! Hope you feel better soon.

Yep, I agree. One of our kiddos has the same. Doc tested both flu and strep and the tests were negative. She feels better today though.
Wingnut 13 Posted February 9, 2018 I called off of work today. I am extremely tired, kinda achey, and my chest feels heavy. I was up half the night coughing phlegm. Right now I am laying in bed and my heart feels like it’s going to pound out of my chest. Im really scared ?
BrokenArrow 52 Posted February 9, 2018 Just rest up. If by some chance you did catch the flu then the best thing you can do is drink clear liquid and rest up. It just has to pass out of your system. Judging by your profile picture you look young and healthy. You are not in any risk groups that have serious complications from the flu. The biggest concern you should have is dehydration from either excessive nose blowing, diarrhea or vomiting (if you even have the latter 2.) Drink up and rest up. No one likes being sick, but it will pass. Grab a book or binge watch something on netflix. I know it's easier said then done but try not to think about it. A lot of anxiety symptoms run parallel with flu symptoms so your worry is only playing into your issues more. Also, just because you are coughing and have phlegm doesn't always mean flu. That is a classic symptom of a common cold also. Take some over the counter pain reliever if you'd like such as Tylenol.
Sayruh 11 Posted February 10, 2018 My 8 year-old daughter dealt with a bout of the flu last week and you know what, she was fine within 4 days. If a healthy 8 year old can get through it, so can you! THe vast majority of people will NOT die from flu complications. The media has a knack for over-hyping and fear-mongering with things like this. To be honest with you, I think that is one of the main reason we are seeing so many people going to doctors and hospitals this flu season. They get s cough, go to the doctor, doctor reports that to the CDC, stats go up in the influenza-like-illness category whether or not it's actually the flu, news gets report, news shout "WORST FLU EVER", cycle continues. It seems that all the media is doing is causing mass hysteria. I promise you will be a-okay. Try to relax. Take a bath, watch Black Mirror on Netflix, eat some soup, drink some water and get some rest. Hugs!
jonathan123 2367 Posted February 10, 2018 Gosh Sayruh. You sure have got it! I stopped looking at the local news on TV because on every occasion it begins with something negative. Illness, robbery. floods, snow, you name it it will have it. Wouldn't it be nice to switch on and someone says 'What a lovely day No bad news this morning folks'. Some hopes!!! The old journalist saying comes to mind . 'Good news is not news'. It seems that all the media is doing is causing mass hysteria. Now there's a lot of truth in that. Once again, the power of the mind. People hear about symptoms. They are sensitised and react accordingly. They actually mimic the symptoms of flu, but when tested nothing is found. Mass hysteria is absolutely what it is!!! Politicians are good at this. Plant an idea in the mind that appeals, or is what someone wants to hear and off we go. President so and so said it so it must be right. We say, 'well it was on the news so it must be right'. Yeah?? There sure is an epidemic and a serious one. It's called anxiety and it won't go away like the flu.
