Twinks* 16 Posted April 29, 2012 I have THE worst pain in my shoulders and neck!!! When I go to my yoga class my instructor tells us that all of our emotions are held in our shoulders I think she is dead on...even at night they hurt. I was wondering if anyone else has physical pain. *I realize that its also my posture too*
Gilly 1086 Posted April 29, 2012 Yes Mary, every day. I get up and I'm not so bad except a bit stiff. Come night time I'm sore, my shoulders, back, THIGHS ugh knees, everywhere. And it burns. I'm so ready for some decent weather so I can get out more and exercise. Not really enough room to swing a cat in our flat and I don't think it's stopped raining for about a month. scotty 1 Posted April 30, 2012 I am sore today, but I did just move house! Sometimes I get a really stiff neck and shoulder area when I sleep awkwardly, just make sure you have a nice pillow, and you are super comfortable in bed. A nice warm bath will take the tension out. racechick79 2 Posted April 30, 2012 Yes, I definitely experience pain when I am especially anxious. I have been to doctors many times because of having neck and shoulder problems, but they were never able to find anything "wrong". My primary doctor feels that it is the anxiety and stress and, like you said, it is all centralized in that area. When I am able to be more calm, I definitely feel better all around. It is very true that anxiety can affect you in so many negative ways - not just the panic itself!
kinser 3 Posted April 30, 2012 Have you considered a chiropractor? I never thought one would be effective, until I tried it. I had really tense shoulder and back muscles that were causing me terrible headaches, and he was able to manipulate and massage to a degree where the headaches became totally relieved. JungleJulia 235 Posted May 1, 2012 Mary I often have very stiff achy shoulders and neck. It leads to headaches too sometimes. I try to move around a lot to loosen it up. I notice if i'm anxious that I tense up more
Mrs. Rogers 2 Posted May 1, 2012 My anxiety always brings on my cluster headaches, and they are absolutely brutal. I like what your yoga instructor says about holding pain in the shoulders. That's interesting.
sphinx 0 Posted May 1, 2012 I would recommend and osteopath over a chiropractor. Also has anyone tried aromatherapy massage? Where pain is related to anxiety and people getting their backs and shoulders knotted up which I guess is likely on here a good therapist can make a huge difference because they can physically work the knots out, use oils that calm and sooth, and prescribe the same oils in different forms for baths or burners etc, and also teach you to recognize when you are holding yourself tense and how to try and relax consciously. shaun 6 Posted May 2, 2012 When I am under stress my shoulders tighten up, most of the time we are not aware of how tense our shoulders are. Poor posture will worsen the problem and increase tension. Regular deep massages can loosen up your shoulders and upper back. You could research massage techniques online and find someone willing to give you a massage if you don't want to pay for a masseuse. JOYCICLE 654 Posted May 2, 2012 MASSAGE ! MASSAGE ! MASSAGE ! After a very turbulent week I call the massager . If you can't afford a whole hour, even a half hour will help when the pressure is building. Once it's built up and set it, it's hard to get rid of it ! JOYCICLE 654 Posted May 2, 2012 I know shes' called a massage therapist , not a massager.
sphinx 0 Posted May 2, 2012 For those who are short on money it might be worth contacting your local college if they offer courses in massage because they may either have facilities on site for teaching and offer cheap massage in exchange for students learning, or have students who need to get enough hours for professional registration who are not allowed to charge other than for materials. This is how I got a lot of massage when I was younger - I had a friend who was a qualified masseuse but doing his aromatherapy exams - he needed 150 hours practice to be professionally registered as an aromatherapy practitioner during which he could only ask for a donation for oils. SEA81 2 Posted May 2, 2012 One thing I've noticed is that when my anxiety is bad, pain can feel 100 times worse. Try some ICYHOT! And yes, a massage and some meditation work wonders. I have a friend who is a nurse practitioner who even told me that anxiety and depression can cause back paint.
SEA81 2 Posted May 2, 2012 *pain, not paint! Duh! My fingers got ahead of me :-)
Driven 0 Posted May 3, 2012 Posture is very closely related to emotions, and tense posture causes pain. In fact if you make an effort to relax your shoulders and neck, and to take on a comfortable posture, you might find yourself feeling more relaxed. Rose @ Walnut Acre 1 Posted May 5, 2012 A massage therapist does wonders for neck and shoulder pain. I used to go to one regularly until I couldn't afford it anymore. I like the idea of calling a local college to see if they have students who need the practice.
sphinx 0 Posted May 6, 2012 Definitely worth a go - and the lecturers may grab you with your consent to talk to students about the beneficial effects on health from the patients point of view.
shaun 6 Posted May 7, 2012 Poor posture can exacerbate stress by creating tension in the body. There have also been studies which link poor posture to depression. The idea is that you will naturally adopt a more positive attitude if you have a good posture. Slump your shoulders for a whole day and you will feel even more miserable, I have tried it.
sphinx 0 Posted May 7, 2012 It also works the other way around - if you feel good you stand straight and tall and if you feel awful you slouch and slump - it is one of those things where cause and effect are not obvious. Yes you can change your mood by consciously adopting a different posture - but if your mood changes unconsciously then so will your posture.

SarahLizzie 2 Posted May 9, 2012 When my anxiety kicks in and I am overwhelming stressed, is when my normal aches and soreness become painful. I ways take a long hot shower to try to alleviate some of the pain and stiffness, but it generally returns the moment I step out of the shower. For the amount of advil, alleve, tylenol, and other OTC pain relievers I have tried, I need to start buying stock in the companies!

farrah 2 Posted May 23, 2012 I hear you! For the past 2 days, my lower back hurts so much, that it is hard to stand up, or bend. Once I am up and moving its ok, but getting there is a chore. I wish I had the money to go to the Chiropractor. Even with my insruance its $25 each time and he will want me to come 3-4 times a week. 1) thats a lot of money 2) don't know if I can commit myself to leave the house that often. I am hoping it will just go away.
