Really terrified of Dentist

Recommended Posts

So I set up an appt with a dentist for a couple of weeks from now and I am terrified. I have 2 cavities that I know of but I am worried that I actually have more than I thought. I have noticed some brown spots in the crevices of my molars that I have been assuming are just stains but after Dr. Google, I’m worried that they are the start of cavities. I’m more scared of being judged I think than the actual procedures even though I brush twice a day and floss and use mouth wash. I hate this so much.

I don't think they judge.. I think honestly you are just another pair of teeth in their chair. Most people go Bec they have problems and they are there to fix it. I went in Dec to get my wisdom teeth out I thought the dentist was going to climb on top of me to pull it out. It broke in pieces and he had to get it out. I said oh no I'm so sorry it was hard for you and he said I like challenges, it wouldn't be a good day unless I felt like I really helped. I thought that was a fun honest answer!!

If you are nervous about the appt you can always ask for gas.. i do every time.

My partner just went to the dentist after not going for a long time. She was really nervous, and even though she needed a lot of work done, she admitted afterwards that she was relieved and that it was easier than she thought. You'll be just fine!

Thanks y’all. I cried to my husband about it last night and he was pretty comforting. He said he would go to the appt with me. I know I’ll be relieved after it’s over with. Yalls responses made me feel better as well.

I also talked to my best friend about it. She said that she went in with 12 cavities and only got 4 filled. ? I’m worried that I have just as many or more. Ughhhhhh

I have had a lot of work done, and there is still a lot more to do. My problems are all back teeth, for whatever reason, so it's not a cosmetic issue, at least. But I need a few extractions, a couple more crowns and fillings - on top of the seven crowns and one filling I've had over the past decade or so. I don't worry about them judging. Even if they do, oh well. I'm thirty-one years old, don't have time to worry about what people think. :) I do feel much better every time I have another problem taken care of though!

I TOTALLY understand. I JUST went to the dentist a month ago and got a complete checkup with xrays etc. I knew I needed some work done, which I was told awhile ago and kept putting it off, but I was terrified. Anxiety has been so bad for the last several months that I was nervous to go get checked out. I kept fearing something really bad would be found or wrong with my gums or teeth etc. I would panic to even think of what could be etc. My mom went with me to the appt since my husband was working and that made me feel much more at ease but I was nervous when they called me back there. I explained my anxiety to them and told them I was terrified of possibly thinking something could be wrong since I had not been in awhile and actually it was much better than I ever expected! I got great news but some work does need to be done, which I was aware of from previous visits so now my next fear is having to get my wisdom teeth out, which is where they want me to go next. I still have not contacted an oral surgeon. The whole 'being put under' makes me panic! I do not want to be put to sleep. It terrifies me and I am just so afraid of my heart racing or going into panic and all. I really worry that I will get a reaction to the meds they use to numb etc. Why am I thinking all of this? Why? The dentist turned out fine so I know the extractions will also, but the anxiety just keeps telling me otherwise.

Glad you had a good dental visit though!

I totally understand you. You are doing a good thing by getting an app. Im also terrified of doctors and after i was told i had several cavities after a whole life without a single one i didnt went back because i was so scared of getting fillings or anything at all. The thing is i had to go back like 6 years after that cuz one of those cavities started to give me trouble. I still have to get like 4 fillings more although they are waiting to see if they progress or not.

Point is that there is no much point staying away from the dentist cuz eventually one will have to go. Thats why they are there so dont think they will judge you. To help you its their job. =) hope it turns out fine for you.

My biggest fear is something being wrong and the main one is thoughts of a bad reaction to the numbing meds, which I never have before but with all the anxiety I have recently had I am terrified that I will react to the numbing med they use, which does cause your heart rate to increase, now I have had an extraction before for one wisdom tooth and I did fine. None of these thoughts even crossed my mind! I wasn't anxious back the either, but one little trigger right now could set my heart rate off and that scares me into thinking the dental work may do it. I know it sounds crazy. I have health anxiety so I get worked up about medical stuff or my health. Thanks so much for your reply. You'll do fine I'm sure. I was afraid of being judged also but they said they see it all the time and way much worse than my issues. All of mine are in back that need fillings. My front teeth are all great which is good.
