Antibiotics Side Effects

Recommended Posts

I was diagnosed with strep throat this week and given two antibiotics, Amoxicillin and Ciprofloxacn. I've had severe panic attacks the past two nights since starting the meds, and in trying to work out a cause, I checked the possible side effects. Anxiety seems to be a possibility with Ciprofloxacn. Just knowing that helped calm me down, but now I'm wondering if I should continue the meds or talk to my doctor (I would talk to someone before discontinuing them). Has anyone had this kind of problem before? I haven't, so any advice is appreciated.

I actually didn't really like cipro at all. I would wake up and my left arm/hand would be numb.. Which obviously made my anxiety even worse thinking it was something serious. Googled it and there were all kinds of bad reviews about cipro. My knees would hurt, my arms and shoulders and stuff. But after I stopped taking the medicine the symptoms went away. So it's very possible it could just be a side effect.

Hi Belle. Any drug can have strange effects and what suits one can cause problems with another. It is essential that you consult your GP again and explain your fears. Amoxicillin is a very common antibiotic and dentists use it for tooth infections. It is a fairly mild drug so shouldn't cause a problem. The other one I don't know about. I very much doubt if the drugs would cause panic, but it could just be that you are run down with the infection. Attacks can come when we are at a low point, as you would be with any infection. Let the infection pass and see how you feel then.

I am sure that as you pick up you will feel better.      Jon.

Hi Belle. Yes, antibiotics can absolutely do this. I experienced this a month ago for the first time. I was prescribed Levofloxacin (Levaquin) for sinus infection. I did not read inserts before taking it. I assumed my doctor knew what he was prescribing knowing that I have sever anxiety and panic attacks. I took one at night and the next morning I woke up with paranoia and constant panic attacks. One attack would stop and another one would start. I had never experienced anything like this. I read the insert and it stated all of these side effects. I was terrified that I had taken something like this. Definitely contact your doctor and let them know what your side effects are. My doctor said not to take another one. I was told it was a bad reaction. They will stop when the pill runs through your system. Hang in there!
