A week and no test results

Recommended Posts

My SO's ultrasound was last Friday; still no word from her doctor.  I'm an absolute wreck.  She has two suspicious ovarian cysts and put off getting it followed up for six months (the oncologist her regular gyn sent her to said get a repeat ultrasound in three months, but she's had problem with her insurance carrier).  I watched a friend of mine die from ovarian cancer; diagnosed at stage four and gone in about a year.  She was only 35 and had other factors that put her at a low risk (race), so the decent odds against my SO being diagnosed at 41 aren't that comforting to me.  While I hope that if something worrisome showed, she would have been contacted by now, her doctor's office messed up something with the prescription (they failed to fax it; she had to argue to get it done that day and was told they needed the rx faxed in Monday; no way of knowing if the doctor actually did that; I don't have a very high opinion of her GYN 😛 ) and forms, so I'm concerned that the results weren't sent to her doctor's office at all.

Last Friday, like, a week ago? If so, definitely call them and bug them tomorrow, ultrasounds should be quick reads. The odds aren't any higher for your SO than they are for everyone else (very very low) even though you have lost a young friend to this in the past. I hope you both get good news in the next few days and can put all of this behind you. I'm sorry she has a crappy doctor who is leaving you hanging, but it is probably just due to clerical oversight and I wouldn't look into it as a sign of anything else. Maybe check out a new gyno after this is resolved.

Really? It's already been a week and they haven't said anything?

I would say that if they don't call you by tomorrow morning (like before lunch time), call them sometime in the afternoon and ask them what in the world is going on, because when they did my ultrasound, they called me the next day with the results.

I'm with Enid, maybe check into a new gyno after you get the results. You shouldn't be having to suffer the consequences of a doctor who isn't doing you any favors.

I have learned that no news usually means good news. If they aren't in a rush to give you the results, it most likely means that there's nothing that urgently needs attending to. I get scared myself when it takes awhile for my blood test results to get in when I have them done, and I'm constantly reminded by my mother that if there was something very wrong I would know sooner rather than later, but it is very hard to keep in mind. When I'm waiting for the results I of course can't think rationally, but all of my reason comes back after the fact haha. I would still call them, though, just to make sure :) I hope that everything ends up fine for the both of you.

I have found that when it is bad news, it is a very fast follow up. I found out about my serious diagnosis very quickly, within a couple hours of my ultrasound. I was scheduling with a cardio thoracic surgeon the same day and saw her the following week.

My mother was referred very quickly for her skin cancer.

Also, check patient portal if you haven't. Sometimes they are up there before anyone speaks to me when there is nothing to report.

Unless your local healthcare system is particularly sub par, I would expect similar action if it were anything serious.

There is an old saying which goes, bad news travels fast, and I believe this is the typical case with test results.

A number of years ago I had an MRI of my abdomen and pelvis and it took the GI physician 6 weeks to call me with the results, with no issues found. Another time I had an MRI of my brain and the ENT physician called me the next morning with no issues found.

That's smart. I would assume no news is good news, but it seems unusual that they are taking this long for something like that.

Yeah she figures that if it were serious they would've called by now but I convinced her to call because her doctor is so disorganized either way she could have just forgotten to call with results and either way she needs them.

If her doctor is disorganized it definitely was a good idea to have her call, but I agree with her that everything is most likely okay.

Apparently the facility didn't have her doctor's contact info somehow and no one got in touch with her.  She's having trouble getting it sorted out.  FML.  She's not worried at least.

It explains my actions when I saw that message from Molly.

(Disclaimer: I could not find a wall to bang my head on, nor would I do that in the first place) :p

Oh dear, that is just awful... It's good that they didn't sound worried, but that is incredibly irresponsible of them regardless.

Do you have an update Mollyfin?

Sounds like my drs office. I can never trust that the receptionist is doing her job properly! I hope everything is ok with your SO.

At this point I've hit "I'm so frustrated that I give up."  We'll hear something when we hear something and look at all the good my obsessing has done so far.  But good lord there will be a lot of rage posts if it turns out something is wrong and they sat around doing nothing...

She needs to have the ultrasound redone because she went at the wrong time of the month.  Argh.  I love her, but her carelessness and preference to ignore things instead of dealing with them are starting to piss me off right now.  She's at a very increased risk for high grade endometrial cancers (pretty much every risk factor - diabetes, endometrial hyperplasia, PCOS, family history) but didn't see a GYN for the better part of a decade, and now that she's having indicators of serious issues she's at high risk for, she's still choosing to ignore the problem.

She's literally everything to me, and I can't imagine life without her, but I also don't know how to build a life or plan a future with someone who doesn't seem terribly invested in staying alive.  If she eventually gets the all clear (which I hope for but don't dare expect), I know my inclination will be to pretend it's not a problem, until it becomes one again.  But then maybe I'm trying to turn this into a bigger deal than it is so I don't have to think about what I'm really afraid of; I'd rather have her leave me a thousand times over than watch her die.

Endometrial cancer seems to be what they're concerned about over ovarian, which is sort of good; the cure rates are much higher.  But early detection is key to that, and she's let it fester for six months.  I don't need to explain why that isn't good.
