Hello all

Hey,

I've never been diagnosed with anxiety or anything  as I daren't go to the GP about it. But I can honestly say I am a very anxious person. It's gradually getting worse to the point it is affecting my social life, work life and my university studies.

I figured I'd have a shufty at this site just to get to know how others have dealt with their anxiety and to prove to myself it's a normal feeling.

Sorry if this isn't the correct style introduction - figured I'd just jump straight in.

Hope you're all well.

Hi CCC 😄

Hope you had a good festive period!

What is it that's brought you here, what is your anxiety affecting exactly? Your GP is your best port of call, anxiety is such a common thing these days, there's nothing taboo about it! You don't need to take medication if you don't want to, there's loads of avenues! I'd start there 🙂

Personally, therapy and citalopram are what have helped me. Mindfulness has been a great help too, check out the Headspace app! I love their sleepcasts (she says at 3am...we'll ignore that 😅).

If you ever need a chat, always here!

Hi Aria!

I did indeed - though as usual I ate a months worth in a day! 🐽 Hope you're enjoying yours too.

Hard to explain really. It's really affecting work and uni at the moment. Worrying about everything and expecting to fail it all or be fired etc. Going into a mini meltdown which goes quite dark at times.

I'd rather stay away from GP's etc, hoping I can find some useful tips on here and how to get it under some form of control. Ah I'll certainly try the Headspace app - (I shall ignore the 3am bit ahah)

Thanks for the reply and tips though!

Hi ThreeCs. Welcome to the site.  I understand you not wanting to go to the doctors, but is it because of fear as to what they may find? I suggest, as does AriaRen, that your GP should be your first port of call. You would get an examination and be reassured it's anxiety.  You sound a young person and the chances of it being a problem are remote. We can all give you helpful tips and encouragement, but that would follow a trip to your doctors. Once you have been checked over believe them. We tend to doubt everything. It's called 'catastrophising'. Every little twitch become something awful!  That's health anxiety, and the more you worry the worse it will get. That is because worry is fear based, as is anxiety. Your body goes into the fight/flight mode. It's a perfectly natural reaction to fear,  when in fact there's nothing to be afraid of. If you are having therapy then your therapist can reassure you.

Dark times do come in anxiety and the secret lies in acceptance of how you feel. No panicking because you are panicking, if you see what I mean.  Everything passes if we go about it in the right way. Sit down and deep breaths when you feel anxious, and try not to add fear to fear.  Allow it all to come with complete and utter acceptance. This may not work at once. There is no magic wand or a quick cure for anxiety. It can take a lot of patience and perseverance, but I have seen sufferers of 30 odd years recover and so can you.  Take care. Look after yourself. You use the word 'shufty', that's Arabic for 'have a look'. Are you studying Arabic??☺️

Hello ThreeCs,

Welcome to the site :).  I just joined myself as you have probably seen, but I have been around forums almost 16 years.

The first thing I would say has already been mentioned.  Don't rule out getting help from a GP.  The Corona has really messed things us everywhere; anxiety through the roof.  For me, I have actually had to take my vacation time and had almost seven consecutive weeks off.  It's good, but combined with Corona, it's even had an effect on me - depression/lack of motivation.  Fortunately, I am still working from home as I have for the past 10 months, so I can still get sleep corrected.  So, I can tell you that you are not alone.

How you think determines how you feel  - the very first lesson I ever learned about anxiety.  It's thought retraining and it is not easy.

Hi Jonathan!

Oh I'm not worried about what they'll find - just don't want to waste their time or risk having people find out. I'm hoping the tips and advice from people in similar situations will help with things 🙂

Yes, approaching the situation differently will always be a good start - as opposed to just letting it spiral out of control!

Ah I never knew 'shufty' was Arabic. I wonder how it made its way to the North of England - I may have to swap my degree to Arabic! 😄

Hi Ironman!

Luckily covid-19 had minimal impact on me - I still had to go to work through it all which I'm actually somewhat pleased about. Although I do miss my travels...  I'll have to look into the 'thought retraining' and see if it's something I can take up and use.

Many thanks all!

ThreeCs,

I have had panic, anxiety, depression and agoraphobia for years.  I am obviously no expert but one of the things I have learned over the years is you don't have to hide it.  People will accept you or they won't.  Mental disorders are no different than someone with Hypertension or Diabetes.  There is just a stigma there for some reason in regards to mental issues.  You have a safe haven here because we all know how bad it can be.
