How to deal with news related stress?

Recommended Posts

This is coming from a US citizen but I guess it goes out to people in general.

The news is just eating me from the inside out. All of it is negativity and bad news and talking about some really awful things. Especially when we’re talking about politics. For example: making it ok to dump waste into the environment, taking money away from people with disabilities and pre existing conditions, general hatred and bigotry, it’s just really overwhelming. I’ve found myself avoiding the news entirely recently because I just can’t handle the stress. Has anyone figured out a way to deal with news related anxiety?

Hi. ERose. Welcome To AC. :).

Sorry it's taken so long for you to get a reply. You are right! Whether you live in the US or anywhere else the news is nearly always negative. In the UK where I live we are all sick of hearing about Brexit, our leaving the European Union. The radio, television and all the media seem obsessed by it and we don't seem to be getting anywhere. I find the best thing to do is to just listen to the headlines then go over to a programme that is more uplifting. IF you are interested in a particular piece of news then fair enough. But, generally speaking what can you or I do about any of it? It just depresses us. Anxious people are so often sensitive people. They are upset by any sort of suffering or to see others in trouble. It's best to avoid any sort of discussion or programmes that have a negative content. Having said that we have to face a certain amount of tragedy in our own lives. If you are suffering with anxiety then it can be hard going, no doubt about that! But don't allow 'triggers' to set off a bout of anxiety or anxious thinking. The world is a mess but it's no reason why you should become the same. If you practise mental hygiene as you do physical then you can avoid the pain of anxiety. Be choosy about what you watch or hear. Take care.

I'm feeling a lot of that today. I wonder if the world will make it another 100 years. :(
