Finances stressing me out

Recommended Posts

I don't make enough to live on and expenses are putting me thousands $$ in debt. Requests for a raise have been denied, SSDI was denied and all attempts to find a better paying job have been unsuccessful. My family has helped me out already this year. I don't want that to happen again. I'm so ashamed. I don't know what I can do!

I would try to get a part time job to help you get out of the problem you are in. I too had to do the same thing when I was younger.

I'll see what I can do. I already work full time. 7 years of my life I've given to this company and they won't pay me enough to live on. Some nights I don't eat. 😭

I used to work for a CPA firm as a principal of the firm, but not a partner, and I was there for 20 years. I was forced out as they claimed I was making too much money which was a bunch of bunk.

What did you do then? Was that recently?

That was a little over 19 years ago and I was forced to start my own small business, which has been very hard and which I would never do again.

Many years ago, I knew someone who was an international jet pilot for the now defunct Pan Am airlines. He was married with a wife and 2 kids. He told me that one day he was flying on an international flight in Europe and he was thinking how great his life was with a loving wife, 2 wonderful kids and a great job. Pan Am went under and he lost his job and he could not get another job which paid so well. His wife left him and took the kids. He ended up living with one set of friends for a while, then he went to another set and so on. He never fully recovered and I never found out how he ended up.

I had a boss who once told me the following saying which I have always remembered. He said, there will always be someone better off then you and someone worse off then you, so you just have to hope you are somewhere in between.

The worst thing you can do is to compare your life to others. I don't do that either as it can be depressing. Try to keep a stiff upper lip and continue to move forward and think positively. That is how I try to operate, although it can be difficult at times. The key is to not to give up or quit as then you will lose.

I'm not in a better situation now. I can't afford to eat. In an almost hilariously dark irony, I am not in enough debt for the debt consolidation people to be able to help me. Also I don't make enough to pay them back.

Would you be able to take a second job at least part time to earn some more money?

At least in the USA, we have a job shortage.  It might take some of the financial burden off, and some of the stress.

I agree with Ironman about the second job. If you can believe it, I have a lawyer friend of mine who has financial issues and some days he only eats one or two meals a day. You could also apply for a bill consolidation loan which may lower your cash outlay.

I can look. I am just so tired. 😭

It doesn't have to be much - two or three days a week, tops.  And, it's not permanent.

I have even had to think about this and I am a software engineer.  Inflation is a mess.  We are going to end up in a recession at this rate....

The financial situation is dire right now everywhere with rising costs of everything. I agree that the one fortunate thing is that it is a "sellers market" Getting some kind of side hustle should be pretty easy right now. It may not pay a lot or be what you want to do for too long, but it can provide that extra cushion you need etc... If you look particularly in the hospitality industry (restaurants)...often free shift meals might be included - which is always nice. Everyone's been there at one time or another (unless one comes from "old money" or something) and it is very very very tiresome and tiring. I've been quite broke...really really really broke more than once. It sucks. But we get through it somehow - often with ramen noodles lol. Do not be ashamed...everyone...every every everyone...has been there or is there...I promise.
