AnneBoleyn 50 Posted September 7, 2018 So my daughter can be a little bit of a hot box. Every time I take her temp though it's normal. Yesterday she felt warm so I took her temp. it was 98.9. Then I took it again and it was 99.1. I took it yet again and then it was 97.7. I use one of those temple thermometers and I actually like it. Why does she always feel so warm? Is 99.1 a fever? Doesn't leukemia have low grade fevers? Shes 4 and a half.
Angelica Schuyler 217 Posted September 7, 2018 Low-grade fevers are technically between 98.6 and about 101 degrees and last for 24 hours or more. If your daughter's temperature fluctuates a lot, like it did when you were checking it, she's not running a fever. A lot of people have quirks with their body temperatures (mine runs low, for instance, but my body can feel really hot if its warm outside), so I'm sure she's just fine, especially if she's feeling well otherwise. Take it easy with checking your daughter, though. It's hard when you're worried, but you don't want to worry her, too.
AnneBoleyn 50 Posted September 7, 2018 I just don't get it. I can take her temp on one side of her head and it's 99.1 then I take it on the other and it's 98.0 How is that even possible? I'm starting to panic. I haven't panicked in months I've been doing so well. I'm leaving for vacation in like 20 minutes. I'm trying to remain calm and not call her Dr but I'm having a hard time. I'm waiting for my husband to call me back. Also her hair is parted on the side and the part where it hangs over her face is warmer than the other. Or is that me being silly. Or is that me being silly. It sure can make her warmer! These temporal thermometers are super sensitive, too, so it can definitely tell any slight difference in temperature between the exposed part of her head and the area covered by hair. Those thermometers are so weird! THis happens to us, too. I have tried it on myself and one side is always hotter than the other. Either temps fluctuate second by second so readings will always vary...or those thermometers are wonky as crud! You shouldn't worry about those readings. They are all perfectly normal. THe 98.6 body temp is NOT real, it's an average, and as someone said, body temp fluctuates all throughout the day. You shouldn't expect the same temp every time you take it. It's the thermometer, I have the same one and get crazy readings like this. I decided to go with the old fashion under the tongue one and I get more consistent readings. Please try not to stress and enjoy your vacation!!!
lofwyr 215 Posted September 11, 2018 Even if it were a low grade fever, it is hardly a deal breaker. My son had a low grade fever and swollen nodes on his neck for the better part of 4th grade. Sometimes they just get the crud, and keep getting the crud. But 99.1 isn't bad. Don't get in the habit of checking too often, as she will definitely become aware something--your anxiety--is amiss. Kids are amazingly perceptive to our anxiety. Assuming she isn't acting sick, enjoy your vacation and try to put it out of your mind! ?

AnneBoleyn 50 Posted September 12, 2018 I'm terrified she has leukemia
lofwyr 215 Posted September 12, 2018 Those are all in the normal range. 99.1 isn't even considered febrile. There is no fever there. And the other two are cool. You have to quit checking your child compulsively, as they will absolutely pick up on your anxiety. Having known someone who passed from leukemia, a low grade fever--which your daughter does not even have--was actually the least of their problems. Your daughter is fine, and you definitely have to quit checking so much.
