Sour stomach - is this anxiety???

Recommended Posts

I've had what I'd call a sour stomach since at least Tuesday morning.

Backing up a little bit, I made the mistake of reading an article about someone roughly my age who was diagnosed with a terminal illness. His only symptoms prior to diagnosis were off feelings in his gut. I didn't read very much of the article, but I saw enough.

My stomach has felt weird off and on all week. Sometimes I feel very hungry, like I cannot eat enough. Sometimes it feels sour, like there is too much acid in my stomach. I will occasionally experience heartburn and what feels like bloating.

I've been waking up feeling okay, but very quickly the thoughts enter into my head and I start feeling weird.

I'm thinking about it all of the time and I know that cannot help. I know there is a connection between stress and anxiety and a sour stomach. My doctor even cautioned me at one point about his concerns that I might develop stomach issues.

The kicker is that I'm experiencing all this days after reading that article. My brain wants to make a connection.

All I can say is that I've experienced all of what you describe. I had an endoscopy that found gastritis and villi atrophy. I ended up in desipramine (antidepressant that oddly works better for nausea than depression) which offered a modest improvement, and Zofran (anti-emetic). Motility test was normal, Celiacs was negative. Never got any solid answers. For me, my GI system definitely responds to stress (and heck I'm always stressed about something)... PsA and POTS definitely contribute, but I do get instantly nauseous to certain types of stress and anxiety.

I personally think the rabid appetite is kinda a balance thing... I get so nauseous so often that sometimes all I have in a day is what I can drink, so when I'm not nauseous and do have an appetite I get really, really hungry. It kinda has turned into this restrict/binge cycle, which I think makes it worse, especially if I eat a lot before bed (this pretty much assures I'll wake up with an upset stomach) which idk could be GERD since there's inflammation in my throat. I know my hubby has problems with eating before bed but he actually wakes up in the night and I don't. Idk that's often kinda a hollow, acidy feeling and I think it's kinda about stretching the stomach out before having several hours for the food to digest... potentially ending up with an empty stomach that's irritated by stomach acid.

What I can say is that the nervous system is hooked up to the GI system and one effects the other pretty intrinsically. Belly problems are extremely common with anxiety.

How I think determines how I feel.....the first lesson I learned about anxiety.

It's psychosomatic.
