Is it normal to be able to see your abdomen moving around?

Recommended Posts

I can see my abdomen moving around involuntarily (kind of like my testicles do). I think I started noticing this about it when I first noticed the asymmetry a couple of years ago.

Is this normal? Is this just because I'm skinny? Or is it a sign of cancer?

EDIT: OH, FUCK. IT'S NOT. GOOGLE SAYS VISIBLE PERISTALSIS IS ALMOST PATHOGNOMONIC FOR INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION.

I've had this for around 2 years at LEAST.

Google is almost always wrong. How many times have you Googled and it told you something bad? I am thin and I can both feel and see my abdomen moving. It’s not necessarily peristalsis (food moving thru the digestive tract) but can be gas or abdominal muscle contractions. Stay off Google!

When you see it, how noticeable is it?

When I'm lying on my back, I can see a portion of my right abdomen lift up and stay there for a few seconds, then descend. It's always the right side, although I think when I first noticed it a year and a half or more ago I saw the left side doing this occasionally as well.

My GI physician told me that the internet typically shows the worst case outcome and to stay off of it if possible. A friend of mine has a son who is an ER physician. He says patients come to the ER and try to tell him what is wrong with them.
