LouAnne 5 Posted December 29, 2015 (edited) I've been having the same issue that seems to happen during sleep, I'm woken up by a weird rush feeling from stomach to throat & sort of feels like I'm going to be sick & a lump in my throat as soon as I wake up and sit up it goes away but sometime it scares me that much it sends me into an actual panic attack. I've had many symptoms of anxiety most of mine are stomach & throat related as in rush feelings & spasm feelings in my throat, stomach & chest, I've had them many times a day & night for over a year now. But this new thing that's happening during sleep has been on & off for a few weeks randomly.Anyone else experienced this? jonathan123 2368 Posted December 29, 2015 You know LouAnne, there's nothing that you have had that's not anxiety related. What you describe happens to so many. The lump in the throat; feeling sick. Oh yes. When you sleep your body relaxes. In anxiety we often over relax and a sudden awakening puts all the nerves on alert. It takes only a few seconds for the adrenaline to begin to circulate around your body, so the rush you talk about is just that. THEN the mind gets to work, doesn't it? OMG's and 'what ifs' come thick and fast and off you go into a full blown panic attack. Can you see what happens? Fear/adrenaline/symptoms/fear.....................! You can't stop this happening immediately but you can in the long term by accepting how you feel. Yes, even the shock awakening. Deep breaths and relax and accept. Don't add fear to fear. Stop it in its tracks by letting go. Now I am not minimising how you feel. My goodness, have I been there! But I eventually learned to accept and not fight. To me it's the only real way. LouAnne 5 Posted December 29, 2015 Thank you so much for your reply Jon. You would think after a year of all different strange bizzare symptoms I would think oh here's another one don't panic but I do each time a get a new one, I've been doing so well the last few weeks & feeling so much better & then something new crops up. I think the fact that it wakes me from a deep sleep makes its seem a little scarier than it really is. I will take your advice on board as the advice from others on here including yours has really helped since joining....thank you once again.
JOYCICLE 654 Posted December 29, 2015 (edited) I had a similar thing for years and years . I would sit up straight in the bed and gasp and felt I could not catch my breath. Not from a full sleep but when I was almost asleep, nice and relaxed. Turns out it was a trapped burp somewhere in my esophagus. Now that I'm aware of it, I definitely make sure to burp a couple of times after I lay down. Doesn't happen anymore. And Jon is right, when a small thing happens, the brain automatically goes into ' omgomgomg' mode and from there it's hard to rein it back in. As anxious people our brains are always on guard to find us something to worry about. So we have a symptom and freak out and our brain complies. If we have a symptom and respond with ' meh, just anxious crap, who cares'.. our mind, although a little confused because we've trained it to let worry run wild, will ignore the symptom and go about its business. Glad you are here, LouAnne. You're going to be ok Edited December 29, 2015 by JOYCICLE
