SEA81 2 Posted May 9, 2012 I may not be asking this in the right place, and I'm thinking many of you probably won't have any answer, but it's worth a shot... I'm considering adopting in the not so distant future, but I amoften on/off Paxil, and I have been considering getting back on it. I just wonder if this could affect the adoption process? My anxiety is not dehabilitating or anything, so I also wonder if maybe I could just get by without it and avoid the issue all together. Anyway, if anyone has experience with this, I'd love to hear what you have to say.
shaun 6 Posted May 9, 2012 Why are you using medication if your anxiety is not debilitating? Medication should really be the last resort for anxiety problems, there are lots of drug free methods for dealing with anxiety, these methods should be explored before you take drugs to mask the problem. You should discuss your application to adopt with your GP. Your GP will then forward information to the adoption agency and take it from there. Of course it will influence the application process. Twinks* 16 Posted May 11, 2012 How great that you want to adopt Sea !!! I dont think I would even mention that I was on an antidepressant. If its not debilitating then I dont think its anyones business but your own!!
Rose @ Walnut Acre 1 Posted May 14, 2012 I did foster care for several years and have adopted one child. i have OCD and anxiety but it is well controlled with Paxil. I told the social worker about it and there was no problem at all. I don't know know how the department of social services where you are is, but the here would much rather have all the information upfront than find out about it later. Good luck! This is what I was going to say. It's going to depend more on your area and the case worker you get, but you're better off not hiding it. If they find out later and ask why you didn't tell them, then it can cause some problems. It'll make it look like you were withholding and that it's bad enough to be something that scared you away from telling them. Better safe than sorry, even if it might delay things a bit. If its not debilitating then I dont think its anyones business but your own!! I'm afraid it is their business and they must know the details before deciding to accept the application. Deciding whether a person is suitable for adopting is a BIG decision and they need to consider mental health problems etc. I am personally opposed to people with mental health problems adopting children. We know these problems will inevitably affect the children and it is not fair on them. Children learn behaviour from their parents.
