Sunnybunny 289 Posted September 16, 2015 I have been on Citalopram a few times and took it for several years without any major issues. Really. You may feel a bit drowsy until you get used to it but I found some sleepiness to be a welcome change from the anxiety ;-) I think over the long term I did experience a few more headaches as well as some night sweats but no big deal considering the difference it made for my anxiety. It may take a few weeks to really start working so you do have to give it a chance. I'd say you can't really know how it is working unless you stay on it for 4-6 weeks. The worst thing you can do during that time is stop and start the medication. Well, definitely not without your doctors advice anyhow. You have to give it some time to really see how it works for you but I would say you can expect to feel somewhat better within a week or so.Good luck and try not to worry too much about it. I know there is a lot of information online about people who experience side effects but there are far more people out there who are taking these medications and doing well - they just don't bother to come online to report their experiences.
HDBobbers 55 Posted September 16, 2015 You're just going to have to try it as it affects everyone differently. Give it a few weeks to get into your system as well. A few days are not a good timeframe for testing. You will feel sick/off for the first couple of weeks while it gets into your head.

I get the whole 'yeah but it might not happen to you' stuff, I'm usually okay with medication thrown at me.
HDBobbers 55 Posted September 17, 2015 Well... Citalopram is Celexa. There's plenty of stories out there in the positive for that med. On the other hand, there's plenty of negatives. The same holds true for my own meds... Lexapro, or other meds like Paxil or Zoloft. They're all going to have the standard side effects... sleeplessness, fatigue, decreased or non-existent libido, inability or difficulty to orgasm, weight gain, and sweats. The levels of all vary from person to person.I myself am HUGELY opposed to Paxil because I almost killed myself while taking it and in withdrawal while trying to quit the med. However, i know people on these boards and personally that owe their improved life to Paxil. The reviews on these are going to be all over the board. If in a few weeks you're still not agreeing with the med, you can taper off through your doctor while subbing in something else.
Mark G 1186 Posted September 17, 2015 Citalopram never worked for me, just gave me crazy shakes. I have heard that they help others though. Like HD says, you will have to try to see if they're right for you.
Alexandria 13 Posted September 17, 2015 Well I've already taken it now, so we will see.
Sunnybunny 289 Posted September 18, 2015 Maybe I'm just lucky but I'm always surprised by all the reports of people having reactions to medications. I was diagnosed with anxiety more than 30 years ago at age 12 and I have been on and off a lot of these different medications over the years. Sinequan, Norpramin, Prozac, Paxil, Xanax, Celexa, Ativan, Cipralex. I'm sure there are others I've forgotten. Some gave me more unwanted side effects than others, which admittedly is part of the reason why I have tried so many, but the side effects were never serious. Just annoying (dry mouth, night sweats, increased headaches, drowsiness). They have always been tolerable and in fact preferable to the anxiety. As with anything I really believe that we only hear about the negative experiences. And for every negative experience there are countless good ones. The people who are successfully taking these medication are generally getting on with life and don't even think to post about it on the internet. I don't know what the stats are but doctors prescribe an awful lot of these medications - likely more than they should but that's for another discussion.Good luck to you Alexandria. Let us know how it goes but I suspect you will be just fine.
Alexandria 13 Posted December 16, 2015 This is a super delayed response, but I've been on these for almost 4 months, I'm now up to 30mg for the time being, and honestly they've been a god send.I'm less twitchy and less panicky, and overall a hell of a lot more relaxed. Before taking them I looked up positive stories to give me the boost to take it, and I'm glad I did.
