Mole Biopsy Freak Out

Recommended Posts

Just for a little background....I am fair, light brownish hair and light colored eyes.  I have a lot of moles and I've had a lot of sun damage in my younger years  (I'm 41 now).  The past couple years, I have been diligent about seeing a dermatologist.  Early last year, one of the moles that was removed came up "severely atypical - cannot rule out early evolving melanoma with certainty", so I had to go back and get more skin removed.  Since then, I have had a couple that came up moderately atpyical, still causing more skin removal. That I don't mind, I would rather have scars and get rid of it. I had my 3 month skin check a couple days ago (since the possible melanoma, they have me on a 3 month schedule) and I showed her one that my husband said looked a little angry (slightly red) on my back. She removed it and the whole time was telling me what will happen if it comes back moderately or severely atypical (which she knows I already know) and then kind of mumbled that she doesn't think it's melanoma.  I kind of felt like she is anticipating it to come back as SOMETHING.  And now I'm freaking out.  I woke up in the middle of the night (husband's snoring) and as I laid there, I just felt the huge wash of anxiety and I had to get up and go throw up.  I am so scared of what it might come back as.

Well, there isn't much sense in worrying. It hasn't come back as anything yet, and there is no guarantee that it will. Even if it does, so be it. Follow the doc's advice for follow-up and treatment and you'll be fine. You're already doing a great job in being proactive by going to your regular appointments. If it isn't melanoma, but it is "something", I think that would mean BCC or SCC - both if which are extremely treatable/practically curable.

Good luck, and I hope the results are entirely in your favor. Let us know how it goes. I'm sorry you're worried, but try your best not to be.

Binn is right. It hasn't come back as anything yet, and a doctor can't tell by looking and reading into their comments is just going to drive you crazy.

You are doing the best thing you can in being very vigilant. It's human nature to worry about biopsies, but I hope you find a way to stay stress free until you get your results!

I second both of the above! I went to derma for some suspicious looking mole and it was nothing! Sometimes it will be clear as day and theyll tell you (about the possibilities, also those can come back clean) but usually there is no telling. En worst case, if it comes back dirty, even melanoma is extremely treatable. Worry about it if it gets to that! Easier said then done, i know! But try!
