New Here- Panic- "Cotton Wool Spot" in my eye

Recommended Posts

I have a weird update on my end... I saw another long-lasting visual disturbance. It began at the end of May and I can still see it! Same eye but it's very different, visually. Just an isolated, irregular area instead of a big arc. Top right instead of bottom left. More like a clear splotch instead of sparkly-bright or dark.

As soon as it lasted more than a day I booked my one-year follow up with an eye doctor and moved up my general practitioner appt. This time, though, the eye doctor found nothing amiss on fundoscope or visual field test. And all my blood work was perfectly normal! So in a way a relief, but also frustrating having another long-term disturbance that only I can see. I am also having more exercise -induced short-term (<5 minutes) color splotches which seem to be getting more numerous if anything.

Hoping you are having better luck with vision and anxiety than I'm having :)

Good to hear from you again, but I'm sorry you are having another eye issue. What you are describing must be so frustrating but thank goodness they cannot find anything wrong. At first it sounded like floater but no way since early May! Are you seeing a retina specialist? That is who I saw.  What do they think it is?

Thank God and fingers crossed, I've had no issues like the CWS. I get a ton of floaters and occasional flashes/ sparkle that lasts less than a second. Keep me posted, take care!

EyeWhoKnee

Hey there!  I hope you are doing well and your eyes are also! Wanted to check in bc I have my yearly blood work and some things were off that could indicate low iron. I know you had mentioned that.

Hi  @LilyLabVA,

Just wanted to thank you for this post.  I had the EXACT same situation you described in your first post and was sent in to a full panic after my optometrist found CWS on my right eye this morning.  I had blood work done in November and it all came back normal, but I did the whole google-and-find-out-you're-going-to-die this afternoon.   I'm an otherwise healthy adult, but  anxiety surrounding my health has been through the roof and I'm positive it has been spiking my otherwise normal BP.  Your post and the following comments were so helpful and reassuring.  So thank you.

Hi there. I am sorry to hear that it happened to you. I can hopefully bring you some peace by telling you that in over a year I have not had another one. My last blood work came back normal as well, aside from ever so slight anemia due to heavy menstrual cycle. Good look and let me know if you have any questions that I can help with!

Hi again, @LilyLabVA, and welcome, @linsea2!

Lily, it's funny to hear you also had low iron! I wonder if this is just a thing that women with heavy menstrual cycles have sometimes? I wish there was more data on it so nervous people like us didn't have to stress and scrape the internet for answers XD

So, I never really found out what the other visual disturbance I mentioned in May of 2018 was - it was present for about a year, and now I don't notice it anymore. I continued to get eye exams yearly, and nothing else ever showed up!

I went on this forum again today, and saw that I'd ghosted you, so sorry about that!

I have a significant update on my end now though: I am 99% sure I have another cotton-wool spot! It's a very similar *swoosh* with a bright dot at the proximal end. It's not as "bright" as my first one was, but it's very distinct. It started Monday morning.

I'm so sure that it's a cotton-wool spot that, with the pandemic, I don't think that going to see an eye doctor will be worth it at this point. I'm going straight to get a COVID test taken on Saturday, haha. I am hearing theories that the virus is primarily a blood disorder, so I think it could be that this is my only symptom - but I'll update of course on whether or not that's true.

Up until now things have been great though - I had a very healthy pregnancy & healthy baby since I last posted. Had lots of tests and blood work for the pregnancy, of course, and no complications. And, like I said, my eye exams continued to turn out very healthy.

Now that there are three of us, I almost feel we should be exchanging emails or something to keep in touch over the years. XD Hopefully they don't shut this forum down and we lose contact.

Update: no COVID, at least not currently 🙂

I am not having any other symptoms and not wanting to go through extensive testing this round, so I am just planning on ignoring this one and continue living my life

If anyone is still following this, I just found out I have a cotton wool spot and I’m 19 weeks pregnant. No diabetes, no high blood pressure, and freaking out! I’m hoping it’s just a weird pregnancy thing, but I’m really scared 😞

Sorry to hear that… Obviously I only think to check this thread once a year. But yes, it’s absolutely a textbook pregnancy symptom! Hoping your anxiety has already subsided, but I’d say you have nothing to worry about ^_^

Also I hope your new baby is doing well and you are enjoying new motherhood!

Hi EyoWoeKnee, not sure if you're still following this, just wondering how you went with your CWS in sept 2020 and whether you ever received any answers? I am currently experiencing the exact same symptoms as your first attack yiu described at the start of this link! Hope all is well :)
