Is this OCD?

Recommended Posts

When I put clothes on, I have to shake my clothes out either 6 or 12 times. It always has to be a even number and if its not I think something bad will happen. I also count other things as well. When I lock the door, I have to touch the door knob a couple of times before I can leave.

Does this sound like OCD?

Also when my anxity is up I have to clean.

:/

Yes, yes it does. OCD, Obsession = something bad will happen, Compulsion = Must shake clothes even amount of time, touch door knob 2 times. Have you always done it Jen? did that come first or the anxiety?

I think the OCD thing started 5 years ago. I dont know if I did it before or not but I started to noitece more when I got together with my daughters father. Because he noiteced too. I have alway had anxiety, but I have noitced more after I moved to get custody of my nephew. It is really bad when I think the CPS is going to come and check my house. I always think they are going to come over and say my house is dirty when its not and never is, then I have to clean.

I definitely think it sounds like OCD. My husband and I both deal with this. We have talked with the doctors and ours does not seem to be severe. Does it hinder your lifestyle? My husband is on medication because his anxiety and OCD would often times affect other areas of his life. He would be late for work because he had to come back home to check that he had locked the door (that he had made sure was locked three times before we left); and things like that. Mine on the other had has never been that bad. I no longer do this, but one of my compulsions used to be that I couldn't close my eyes to go to sleep until I could divide the first number on the clock into the other two!! So it would have to be 7:21 or 6:18 or 12:24. I don't do that anymore, but it was something that I know was OCD - yet it wasn't something that really affected any other areas of my life.

When we have anxiety we can develop OCD tendencies as a way of feeling safe and secure. It may be you have developed these because of your anxiety and what you have been through. I did it myself. I had to have a bath every night, and I would have to wash in a certain order or I wouldn't be able to go to bed because I'd be scared something bad would happen to me. Now my anxiety has lessened I don't 'have' to to do that any more.

Jen...

Sounds like OCD to me. I have it too. In the mornings when I leave for work I put my dogs in the cage and quadruple check that my one little dog Roxy is in there. I then get in my car (already second guessing myself I put her in the cage) will drive half way to work and come allllll the way back to check on her :(. I have other OCD tendencies also and what has helped me is CBT therapy thru my psychologist. :)

One important thing about ocd is to try to pinpoin where/why/how it began. Not necessarily in general, but the specific thing. Like your clothes...did you put on some clothes witha bug in them once and scare you bad OR did you see someone or hear someone that put on clothes and something bad happened like a bug bite or something else? And that scared you super bad at the time so now you have to double check?

The apartment where I used to live before I moved, had gotten some roaches in it before I left and it started up. When I first noited I dident shake my clothes I just counted.

This is definitely obsessive compulsive behaviour. You should visit your local doctor and tell him about your symptons. Judging by what you have told us, he will be inclined to diagnose you with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Do not avoid seeking help, the problem could escalate.
