Great inexpensive tasty dishes (without cheese)?

Recommended Posts

My Dad keeps telling me that I have been spending too much money at the grocery store and that I need to incorporate a few more inexpensive easy homemade meals into what I purchase. I am somewhat picky and cannot stand cheese! Preferably high in protein because I am trying to gain muscle.

Here are some dishes I enjoy making

Bolognese Sauce

Bruschetta Bianca (Bruschetta with just Olive Oil, Garlic and Salt)

Bruschetta Bianca with grilled Eggplant

Grilled eggplant

Tacos/Burritos

Grilled Salmon

Grilled Steak

Rosemary-Garlic Roasted Potatoes

Arrabiata sauce

Grilled Chicken

Beef tomato stew

and more

I love to eat Chicken or shrimp. I like to buy the frozen Gordon's foods. They have Tilapia fillets that are soo good! I also love their classic grilled shrimp. I like to cook chicken in my George Foreman grill and have a side of steamed veggies. Altough I would much rather have fried foods, these foods are my new healthy favorites!

It is trite, but rice and beans are your friends. Beans especially are very inexpensive, and they are packed with protein and other goodies.

You will need to eat lots of protein if you want to gain muscle. Ideally you will buy the best quality meat you can afford. This can be achieved by buying in bulk. By buying in bulk you can reduce the price below the standard supermarket meat and raise the quality sunstantially. Look online for grass-fed meat, there are some bargains to be had if you buy in bulk.

I love cooking!

You can make an awesome Beef Chilly really easy. No cheese, lots of protein.

Heres how I do it!

1 Pack of ground beef (Lean if you can do it!), 1 can tomato soup, 2 table spoons chilly powder, 1 celery, 1 carrot, (both optional), 2/3 chopped tomatoes, and beans. Top up with water, and boil for 2 hours.

Very very cheap to make, you can make it once, then freeze the portions. Very filling, and very tasty.

As for chicken, buy it bone in, skin on, and you can get it for half price. Marinate it over night in olive oil and some spices, and grill it. The flavour is amazing, and it is very cheap if you buy chicken legs or wings instead of breast.

Buying the big "family pack" of ground lean beef is a good investment, as from that you can make homemade meatballs (beef, eggs, bread, salt, pepper, garlic, onion, spices -VERY PROTIENY), Pasta Sauce (beef, 1 tin chopped tomatoes, basil, oregano, garlic, water, butter), Burgers (beef, bread, onions, salt, pepper), Tacos (beef, lots of water, chilli powder, Cayenne pepper, Black Pepper, Paprika, Garlic), Chilli (see above).

If you want some specific recipies, I can help you out with quantities. I am recommending beef, lean, because it is a lot less fatty than pork, and much cheaper than chicken.

Cooking on a budget is so much fun, if you need advise, just let me know!

I love to cook pasta but it's seems to be incomplete without cheese! I love cooking pasta using canned tuna. You can take out the cheese if you want and it's pretty easy to prepare. Simply get 3 cans of tuna, 3 packs of tomato sauce, 1 small pack of tomato paste, onion, garlic, mushroom and that's it! Saute the minced onion and garlic put the canned tuna (make sure to remove the water). Let it simmer for a bit then put all the tomato sauce and tomato paste. Allow it to simmer for 7-10 minutes. Put the mushroom and voila! You now have your tuna pasta sauce! Spread it to your pasta noodles and it's done! :-)

You could cook a lamb curry, high in protein and good for you. Use the lamb fat to cook the onions and spices, add whole spices like cinnamon, clove, and cardamon to the lamb fat, add lots of sliced onions and cook until dark brown. Add ginger and garlic paste, chilli, and ground spices like coriander, cumin, chilli powder, and turmeric. Add the lamb, cook for 5 minutes, then add fresh tomatoes and simmer until thick.

I think one of the fastest, simple, and cheap but still flavorful dishes that I make regularly is Sausage, Peppers, and Onions. Typically I get kielbasa because it is already cooked, but any sausage will work. Cut it up with bell peppers and an onion; then fry! Even my husband can make this one :)
