jemcintyre 0 Posted April 19, 2012 I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I've been suffering from Post Partum Depression for about two months now. I visited my doctor and he put me on the lowest dose of Paxil, one pill knocked me out for two whole days and I was unable to care for my baby. I haven't tried any other medications because I can't afford the negative effects. I can't keep trying medicines that make me unable to care for my child. Medications of any kind always seem to have extreme effects on me. I'm not sure what to do about my anxietry.
mrsalphabet 4 Posted April 19, 2012 If you have a good support system I say try the meds again. My side effects lasted about two weeks, and then I was back to feeling like myself again, only without the anxiety! My side effects at first were, nausea, brain fog, and sleepiness. I had to make sure to take mine with food to help with the nausea, and I also took it with supper so that my dh was home and could handle the kids for the evening. I would go to be early. In the morning the brain fog and nausea was gone until I had to take the next pill. This only lasted two weeks and then the brain fog was gone along with the nausea. If you can make it through the first two weeks I promise you it does get better. However if you have a baby to look after you may need some help I hope you can find something to help you.
shaun 6 Posted April 19, 2012 It may take a few weeks or longer for your body to adapt to the medication. The stages on a new medication can be difficult and shock the body. I remember when I was taking a similar medication and I had some strange experiences. If you are sure you cannot take medication, you will have to learn to manage your anxiety naturally. Exercise, good diet, breathing techniques and positive thinking can be used to do this.
JungleJulia 235 Posted April 20, 2012 Sorry to hear about your troubles Jem. Everyone responds differently to medications and you have to decide what's best for you. Personally I had bas experiences with a few medications and so I don't take any. I have managed to improve a lot but it's maybe a harder road. If you want to try other methods I recommend trying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for anxiety. It helped me a lot. Good luck xx

mrsalphabet 4 Posted April 20, 2012 Yes I would look into CBT as well. I've heard people have great success with it. I also take B12, Omega's and a B Stress complex vitamin that has seemed to help as well. I hope you find something that works for you
Quirky Jessi 2 Posted April 20, 2012 Do you have a support system in place? If at all possible, finding a friend or family member that can help with the baby just while you get through the first week would help immensely. It may obviously take longer to fully adjust, but the extreme effects will take place right at the beginning, like you encountered. Make sure you talk to your doctor about how it knocked you out for 2 days like that because s/he might have a different suggestion of what to try, and put you on an even lower dose of the next one, just in case. Urban Legend 0 Posted April 26, 2012 That's is very unfortunate to hear! I am glad CBT is working for you though. I know a lot of people that use yoga for their depression and have fond success. I hope you do as well!
kinser 3 Posted April 28, 2012 As others have mentioned, the side-effects you are experiencing from Paxil will likely subside after several days (obviously, you'd need help with the baby during that time). Or you might request to try another type of SSRI from your doctor - I think there may be some others with less severe side effects. You could also see if you can start out at a smaller dose and work you way up to a therapeutic level. I hope something works for you - PPD is just awful
