googooish 4 Posted July 31, 2013 Does anyone ever experience a lump in the throat from panic attacks, and along with heart palpitations? I'm feel like I'm dying...
MrsCollMom84 2 Posted July 31, 2013 Wow you hit the nail on the head for me! My major symptom of anxiety is fearing something is stuck in my throat. It drives me crazy sometimes. It is a symptom of my anxiety even when I am not having a panic attack. It makes it difficult for me to eat. There are a lot of things I simply don't eat. I feel for you and know you aren't the only one. From what I have heard that Is a fairly common symptom.
jonathan123 2368 Posted July 31, 2013 Hi both. Yes it is a very common problem in anxiety. It is called something like 'globus' something or other. (Have forgotten the word but Gilly knows it). I suffered with it during my GAD and it can be a really difficult symptom to deal with. I stopped going out for meals for a long time but it did pass as I recovered so do not regard it as a permanent feature of anxiety. If you have to eat in front of strangers try just eating the soft bits. Once food is in the mouth Nature takes over and we have to swallow like it or not. Just try and accept it for the moment as part of the anxiety. It does go believe me as you recover. Palpitations!!! Join the club. This is what started my GAD as I had an attack out of the blue and being ignorant about GAD thought I was having a heart attack. Still get them now and then but being a lot older and, I hope, wiser I just accept them. I know my heart is OK so I do not allow the 'plaps' to get in my way any more. They can be caused by indigestion but are usually, in the case of anxiety, the result of some sort of upset or a stressful situation. Nothing whatever to worry about. Regards. Jon. googooish 4 Posted July 31, 2013 Thanks guys. I don't have a problem eating per se, I just, like you said, feel like I'm dying. I can usually go to sleep and it goes away. Last night when I wrote that, I felt real bad too, like I was sick or something. Its like, it just takes me down, all I can do is lay down. I can barely move our talk. Oh this is driving me crazy. I wasn't, our at least I thought I wasn't, even having a panic attack. I felt fine in that regard. Just those horrible symptoms. Yuck. Thanks for replying. Btw it's about 5:40 in the morning and I feel fine. Uuuugggghhhh!
googooish 4 Posted July 31, 2013 Oh, btw, flies anyone think that drinking red bull could possibly make my symptoms of panic attack worse??
Gilly 1086 Posted July 31, 2013 Oh yes googoo yes yes yes. Red Bull contains a high amount of stimulant. Avoid avoid avoid. Globus hystericus, the lump in throat sensation. I have it a lot too. I have issues with my stomach a lot, it's always something. I take omeprazole/prilosec and can go months with no problems, first 5 months of this year had no problems, then I had a bitter taste, and that lump in throat and I became focused on it and a little worried. Now I don't have the lump feeling but an acidy, gnawing, gurgling sicky stomach. I'm totally sick of it. Saw my gastro for a check up a couple weeks back, told them. They think nothing of it, ton of blood work seems ok. It just majorly sucks and gets you down. I told my therapist when it gets like this is is REALLY hard not to feel the impending doom. I go into myself and get all caught up with thoughts of dying. And this has happened SO many times to me and it has always passed but it still gets me down. Avoid stimulants, caffeine, defo red bull. Try chamomile tea instead, add some honey if you like it sweet, manuka honey is good for the stomach and throat. Anxiety and panic and the gut are very closely linked and palpitations can often be caused by digestive issues (close proximity of the vagus nerve to the stomach) I used to lay down to sleep and within minutes my heart would start flip flopping and thumping oddly, every night that used to happen when my anxiety was first bad. I kept a pack of antacids besides my bed and would take one, then feel the gas bubble, a burp and it felt better and I could sleep.
JOYCICLE 654 Posted July 31, 2013 No red bull, no energy drinks, no stimulants, no caffeine! When my panic was at my worst I had to go all the way off coffee for about probably 6 months or a year. I slowly let it back in, but half / caff and then full strength to see how I tolerated it. Definitely not a redbull.......oh dear oh no !
MrsCollMom84 2 Posted July 31, 2013 I can't even drink a Dr Pepper anymore! I have turned to hot teas such as peppermint tea or like Sleepytime teas for the evening. They also have a very calming affect!
jonathan123 2368 Posted August 1, 2013 Hi. You are very wise to keep off stimulants. I have to limit my coffee intake to one cup in the morning and that's it. But do we realise how much stimulant the manufacturers put in almost every drink these days? You are safe on herbal teas and even decaff tea which we drink but the rest, best left alone. Jon. That was hard but I'm ok now with it, and coke but coffee nope, can be panic free for weeks and think, oh I can have a latte! and then BOOM.
googooish 4 Posted August 13, 2013 Idk why, but I'm just now, seeing these, answers. Well, giving up red bull will be hard, but not that hard. It's just kind of a, morning routine, I go get when one while I'm driving to work. Ok! No more red bulls. I forgot about taking prilosec, I need to get some of that...Thanks for y'alls help. It's much appreciated. I've been feeling better lately. It's kinda like, I will feel a whole lot better for a couple weeks and then I will feel horrible for a couple weeks. Off and on. Off and on. In sick of this! =(
jonathan123 2368 Posted August 14, 2013 Hi goo. Don't let it worry you. This is the 'yo yo' effect of nervous illness. Up one day down the next or even fom month to month. It is very disconcerting and upsetting but another of those symptoms to be expected as we recover. 'Setbacks' do occur and I am in one now. We have to 'batten the hatches' and push on with as much acceptance as we can muster. We can curse a setback; yell at it; swear at it but it will run its course so just let it do that. Glad you feel better and you will find that the better periods get longer as time goes by. Patience is not a virtue that we sufferers have a lot of so we get impatient and that increases the anxiety. Coming on here helps and to 'have a go' helps even more. Jon.
