Prozac or SSRIs cause jolts, jerks, involuntary muscle movement?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just started taking Prozac , I actually made a mistake of taking one at night and one in the morning. It is not supposed to be taken at night from what I read.  t I was having jerk movements  all night long , which made it very hard to get some rest. Then today , when I was really tired I was still having myclonus jerks , etc. I think it has gotten a little bit better throughout the day but not sure.

Does anyone know if this could have been caused or amplified by the Prozac. Specially since I doubled up on it by mistake?

I am thinking about not taking it for a while and see if it helps. Please advise

Contact your provider and ask. You can also call  and ask the pharmacist if you cannot get to your provider. I know that SSRI’s can cause twitching.

I'd def call either your Dr or pharmacist.. idk if it's good to just stop medicine like that...I know you just started but I'd at least talk to a Dr about it and when to take the next one etc.

Stopping cold turkey will likely give you weird withdrawal effects that will encourage your hypochondria further.  Consult your doctor before discontinuing medication.

Yes I get all that from lexapro.... I have been on it for about 3 months now so the twitching and jerks are getting better but I still have it.

@mollyfin @Leah1976 I only been on it for 2 days. I wonder if that could be it. It was so bad today that my hands shake non stop when trying to type , grab stuff etc. But it was both hands, both limbs etc. Not my problem side only. Almost like the hypnic Jerks, but very suttle , which you can barely notice.

I started Zoloft a little over a month ago and have had a LOT of myoclonic jerks in my whole body since. My arms jerk, my legs jerk, my butt will jerk, everything, lol. Seems to be one of the less common side effects of SSRIs, though.

Interesting, during the day as well?

Cuban,

Others have mentioned it, but I want to highlight it. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. DO NOT stop taking it without first consulting the prescribing doctor. With SSRIs they wean you when starting and stopping the medicine.

Yes. I would say I get it pretty equally during the day and at night.

One more thing. I take my SSRI in the morning. I tried it before bed at first and wasn’t sleeping well.

Did you notice yourself waking up many times during the night? I remember one night I woke up literally like 9 times.

Do you happen to be on sertraline? I'm on 50mg currently and it was helping tremendously until I had to switch my schedule because I wasn't sleeping. Now my anxiety is flaring again as I forgot to take it for two days when I changed my schedule. Did this happen to you? Sorry for all the questions, haha.

No. Citolopram (Celexa). Taking medicine in the morning is harder for me to remember . I just configured a reminder on my phone.
